Why a Christmas tree?

I am a strong believer in the fact that for everything we waste, our children and their children and many generations to come will be paying for it. Why not turn off the heater and wear a sweater? Having said that I dont understand how the very people who promote “going green”, recycling, conserving energy and water cut up a whole load of trees in the name of Christmas. Sorry if this offends anyone but why kill so many trees for just decoration? How much more cheer can this tree add to Christmas? How much oxygen from the air are we cutting away? The tree is just thrown away when the season is over and it benefits no one!
